4 Things to Expect on a New Mexico Mule Deer Hunt

A New Mexico mule deer hunt is a classic spot-and-stalk adventure. Hunting these western icons is totally addicting and it’s easy to see why so many hunters become obsessed with mule deer.

If you’ve never hunted them, here are four things you can expect on a New Mexico mule deer hunt:

1. Be Prepared for Any Conditions

There’s no predicting the weather in New Mexico. You could experience warm temps and hot midday sun, snowy conditions or anything in between. Pack a complete layering system that includes everything from light base layers, to warm insulation, to waterproof and windproof outerwear. We also recommend bringing two pairs of boots. Bring one pair of uninsulated hunting boots for mild weather, plus a pair of insulated boots for cold weather. Having a backup pair is also useful in case one gets wet.

2. Be Prepared to Glass…and Glass

When you’re on a New Mexico mule deer hunt, expect to spend a lot of time behind the glass. If you aren’t using your binoculars constantly, then you’re not seeing enough mule deer. Learn how to work your field of view in a grid, and leave no stone unturned. Sometimes, the flick of an ear or the tip of an antler is all that will give them away.

3. Be Very Persistent and Don’t Give Up

Mule deer have an uncanny ability to materialize out of thin air. You may have glassed the same hillside a dozen times. Then suddenly, a buck will be standing there. If you’re not seeing deer, don’t give up. Keep your eyes glued to your binoculars and your persistence will eventually pay off.

4. Be Patient When You Don’t Have an Approach

When you spot a good buck, don’t be surprised if your guide isn’t eager to go rushing in. Take the time to plan your approach. Make sure the wind is in your favor. Mule deer are creatures of habit. If you don’t bump them, they’re likely to stay in the area and follow the same routines. Be patient, and wait for the perfect opportunity to put the stalk on a big buck.
