Update From our October Elk Hunts in New Mexico

During a quick break in our hunting schedule, we’d like to share a quick update on our October elk hunts here in New Mexico. Here’s a rundown of what happened at LOH Outfitters last month…

The October elk hunts here in New Mexico got off to a quick start and our hunters took some nice bulls. Rut activity seemed to be a little better than what it was during the bow season. The first 10 days in October seemed to be especially active with bugling elk.

The clear downside to this season has been the many bulls with broken antlers. The extremely dry year has created one of our worst seasons for busted up bulls. Nearly every mature bull we encountered had at least one point broken off.

Despite that frustration, our muzzleloader season always brings our highest success rates. And once again, this year didn’t disappoint. The drought and unseasonably warm conditions had pushed the bulls into some different areas. But our hunters and guides worked hard to find success.

The middle of October brought a snowstorm that helped push bulls into their wintering grounds. This proved to be productive. And the change in weather has us looking forward to the late season November hunts!
