3 Ways To Increase Your New Mexico Draw Odds

Published March 5th, 2024 by Ryan McSparran

New Mexico does not have a preference point system. It's more like a lottery. Even if this is your first year to apply, you have a realistic chance to draw! In New Mexico, you never have to think, “I’ll never catch up with preference points to draw a good hunt.” You could draw anytime, so don’t wait to being applying in New Mexico.

While there is no preference point system, there are a few tips and tricks that can help increase your odds of drawing a great tag. If you are interested in the quality hunting that New Mexico has to offer, it’s worth taking every advantage.

Here are 3 ways to increase your New Mexico Draw odds:

1. Apply With An Outfitter. Applying with an outfitter puts you in a separate draw pool that can drastically increase your draw odds in New Mexico. Compared to applying as an unguided nonresident, hunters who apply with a licensed outfitter have a big advantage!

In New Mexico, 84% of the tags are allocated to in-state residents. Only 6% are allocated to nonresident applicants. However, a separate 10% of the license allocation is set aside for hunters who have contracted with a licensed outfitter. That is a significant advantage for guided hunters! And it’s probably the greatest thing you can do to increase your odds of going on some incredible hunts.

Many of our clients are repeat hunters and they have drawn multiple tags for multiple species in New Mexico. Call us at 575-315-6674 to book your hunt.

2. Apply For Multiple Species. Big game hunting isn't just a fall activity in New Mexico. It's year-round! When you apply for multiple species, like elk, deer, antelope, oryx, ibex, Barbary sheep and bighorn sheep, you increase the likelihood of drawing a great tag. Plus, you can spread your hunting throughout the calendar year.

Barbary sheep (aoudad) hunting in New Mexico happens throughout the winter months. Oryx hunting can take place nearly year-round! When you consider all the hunting opportunities that New Mexico has to offer, you aren’t limited to cramming all your time off of work or away from family during the fall months.

Spread out your hunting calendar. And by doing so, increase your odds of drawing a tag for a great hunting adventure!
