What to Pack for a Successful New Mexico Hunt: A Complete Gear Checklist

Whether you're chasing Elk, Mule deer, Antelope,Barbary sheep, or Coues deer, one thing is certain - hunting in New Mexico’s rugged terrain requires serious preparation. At LOH Outfitters, we’ve guided hundreds of hunters through everything from high-alpine elevations to rocky desert slopes. One of the most common questions we get is: “What should I pack for my hunt?” This detailed gear checklist is designed to help you arrive ready, stay comfortable, and maximize your chances of success in the Land of Enchantment.

Why the Right Gear Matters in New Mexico

New Mexico hunting is unique due to its wide-ranging elevations, unpredictable weather, and rough terrain. One day you may be glassing a sun-drenched canyon, and the next, hiking through snow at 8,000+ feet. The gear you bring will impact your ability to stay mobile, glass effectively, and stay safe.

From hunting layers and optics to personal items and weapons, this comprehensive checklist will ensure nothing important gets left behind.

Essential Clothing for Your New Mexico Hunt

  • Layered Clothing System: Temperatures swing drastically between morning and afternoon. Bring moisture-wicking base layers, an insulated mid-layer (like down or synthetic puffy), and a weatherproof outer shell.
  • Durable Pants: Opt for lightweight but rugged pants - double-layered knees are a bonus for kneeling while glassing.
  • Insulated Gloves and Beanie: Cold fingers can end a hunt quickly when glassing or pulling a trigger.
  • Neck Gaiter or Balaclava: Great for wind protection or keeping dust out on windy days.
  • Comfortable Hunting Boots: Broken-in, waterproof boots with excellent ankle support are a must. You’ll cover serious miles across loose rock and steep slopes.
  • Gaiters: Highly recommended for Barbary sheep and bighorn sheep terrain to keep debris out of your boots.

Hunting Gear & Optics

  • Backpack: A high-quality hunting pack with a meat-hauling frame is essential. Choose one with 2,500-4,000 cubic inch capacity depending on hunt duration.
  • Binoculars: At least 10x42s for most hunts. You’ll be glassing a lot - especially on sheep and mule deer hunts.
  • Spotting Scope & Tripod: Required for longer-range glassing. Helps identify game across vast basins and ridgelines.
  • Rangefinder: Especially useful for open country and long-range shots.
  • Rifle or Bow: Sighted-in and proven at various distances. Bring extra ammunition or arrows.
  • Shooting Sticks or Bipod: Stable platforms increase accuracy during field shots.

Camp Essentials (If Not Lodging with LOH)

If you’re not staying in one of LOH’s private lodges, you’ll want to be sure your personal camping gear is dialed in.

  • Tent or Wall Tent Setup
  • Sleeping Bag Rated for 0°F-20°F
  • Sleeping Pad or Cot
  • Camp Stove or Jetboil
  • Coolers for food and game transport
  • Lighting: Headlamp + Lanterns
  • Water Jugs or Purifier

Note: Many LOH hunts include lodging with provided meals and comfortable accommodations. Check your hunt details for what’s included before packing camp gear.

Field Essentials

  • GPS or OnX App with Offline Maps
  • Knife & Field Dressing Kit: Also bring gloves, game bags, and paracord for hanging meat.
  • Headlamp with Extra Batteries
  • Compass: Always smart as a backup to GPS.
  • First Aid Kit: Include blister care, tape, Ibuprofen, and antihistamines.
  • Firestarter: Waterproof matches, lighter, and fire starters.
  • Sunscreen & Lip Balm: New Mexico sun is intense even in cooler months.
  • Water Bottle or Hydration Bladder
  • Energy Snacks & Protein Bars

Optional Items That Can Make a Big Difference

  • Trekking Poles: Reduce knee stress and improve balance on uneven terrain.
  • Wind Checker: Helpful for stalking elk or mule deer.
  • Decoy or Elk Call: Especially useful for cow elk or rut hunts.
  • Camera or GoPro: Capture the memory of your New Mexico hunt.
