Cow Elk Hunting in New Mexico: What to Expect and How to Prepare

Cow elk hunting in New Mexico offers an exciting, affordable, and rewarding opportunity for hunters of all levels. Whether you're looking to fill the freezer with high-quality meat or sharpen your skills before a future bull hunt, cow elk hunts are a smart and strategic choice.

Why Hunt Cow Elk in New Mexico?

New Mexico offers a wide range of public and private land opportunities for cow elk hunting. These hunts are often easier to draw tags for, more affordable, and boast higher success rates than bull elk hunts. For many hunters, cow elk provide an ideal entry point into Western big game hunting.

With healthy elk populations across the state and professional outfitters like LOH Outfitters offering fully guided hunts, New Mexico is one of the best places in the country to pursue cow elk.

What to Expect on a Cow Elk Hunt

Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect on a typical cow elk hunt in New Mexico:

• Hunt Length: Most cow elk hunts range from 3 to 5 days.
• Terrain: Expect to hunt in a variety of landscapes - from pine forests to high desert and rolling mesas - depending on the unit and time of year.
• Weather: Temperatures can fluctuate drastically. Be prepared for cold mornings and warm afternoons, especially in late-season hunts.
• Spot-and-Stalk Style: You’ll likely do a lot of hiking and glassing, moving through terrain to get into shooting position.
• Shot Distance: Most shots are between 100 to 300 yards, so be prepared to shoot confidently at these ranges.

Essential Gear for Cow Elk Hunting

Having the right gear can make or break your hunt. Here’s what you need to pack:

• Muzzleloader:  We currently use the GunWerks Muzzleloader.  Make sure you’re dialed in at realistic hunting distances.
• Optics: A good pair of binoculars (8x42 or 10x42) and a spotting scope can help locate elk from a distance.
• Clothing: Dress in layers. Merino wool base layers, insulated jackets, and waterproof outer layers are essential.
• Boots: Well-broken-in, waterproof boots are a must for covering rugged ground.
• Backpack: Carry water, snacks, ammo, and field dressing tools.

Physical Preparation

Even though cow elk hunts can be less demanding than some bull hunts, you should still be in good physical condition. The terrain can be steep, and elevation ranges from 6,000 to over 10,000 feet. Cardiovascular fitness and strong legs will help you stay mobile and make the most of your opportunity when it presents itself.

Tag Options and Application Info

Cow elk tags in New Mexico are available through both the annual public land draw and private landowner vouchers (through the EPLUS program). Draw odds are typically much higher for antlerless tags than for bulls, and hunts are often offered during both early and late seasons.

If you want help applying or securing a landowner tag, contact LOH Outfitters. We walk our hunters through the entire tag process and provide options that best suit your goals and timeline.

Meat Yield and Ethical Considerations

One of the biggest draws of cow elk hunting is the meat. A mature cow elk can yield around 150 to 200 pounds of boneless meat, making it a valuable addition to your freezer. Elk meat is lean, flavorful, and one of the healthiest wild game options available.

While cow elk hunts are often perceived as easier, ethical hunting standards still apply. Take clean, ethical shots and prioritize animal welfare and proper field care to preserve your harvest.

When to Book Your Hunt

Booking early ensures access to the best tags and prime dates. Cow elk hunts often fill quickly - especially those on private land with guaranteed tags. LOH Outfitters offers customizable cow elk hunt packages for archery, muzzleloader, and rifle seasons.
